Giordano:
" Andrea Chénier "
L'improvviso

Ich übertrat die Schwelle einer Kirche;

Ich übertrat die Schwelle einer Hütte;
dort war ein Mann, der frevelte;
der Erde fluchte er, die kaum
genug trägt, um die Steuer zu entrichten.
Gott lästerte er,
verfluchte alle Menschen
um seiner Kinder Elend willen.

In diesem großen Elend,
was tut der Adel?

In Eurem Auge allein
erblicke ich hier den Ausdruck
menschlichen Mitgefühls,
drum blickte ich zu Euch,
als wäret Ihr ein Engel,
und sagte: Hier ist des Lebens Schönheit!
Doch dann, als ich Euch sprechen hörte,
durchbohrten neue Schmerzen meine Brust.

O schönes Mädchen,
verachtet nicht des Dichters Wort:
Hört an! Ihr kennt sie nicht, die Liebe!
Die Liebe, Himmelsgabe, spottet ihrer nicht,
das Leben und die Seele der Welt ist Liebe!

Un dì all'azzurro spazio
guardai profondo,
Gridai vinto d'amor:
T'amo tu che mi baci,
divinamente bella, o patria mia!
E volli pien d'amore pregar!
Varcai d'una chiesa la soglia;
là un prete ne le nicchie
dei santi e della Vergine,
accumulava doni -
e al sordo orecchio
un tremulo vegliardo
invan chiedeva pane
e invano stendea la mano!

Varcai degli abituri l'uscio;
un uom vi calunniava
bestemmiando il suolo
che l'erario a pena sazia
e contro a Dio scagliava
e contro agli uomini
le lagrime dei figli.

In cotanta miseria
la patrizia prole che fa?

Sol l'occhio vostro
esprime umanamente qui
un guardo di pietà,
ond'io guardato ho a voi
sì come a un angelo.
E dissi: Ecco la bellezza della vita!
Ma, poi, a le vostre parole,
un novello dolor m'ha colto in pieno petto.

O giovinetta bella,
d'un poeta non disprezzate il detto:
Udite! Non conoscete amor,
amor, divino dono, non lo schernir,
del mondo anima e vita è l'Amor!

One day I stood raptly gazing
at the blue vault of heaven
and at the flower-filled meadows;
the sun rained showers of gold
and the earth was a golden splendour:
the world seemed a limitless treasure,
and the firmament its casket.
The earth breathed a caress,
a living kiss upon my face.
Completely overcome by love, I cried:
I love you, you who kiss my face,
my heavenly-beautiful motherland!
And my love spurred me to prayer.
I stood upon the threshold of a church,
and there a priest stood,
piling gifts about the niches
of the saints and the Virgin -
and turned a deaf ear
to the entreaties of an aged man
who vainly begged for bread,
holding out his shaking hand in vain!

I entered some humble cottages,
and there heard a man cursing,
reviling the soil that yielded
barely enough to pay his feudal dues,
and execrating God
and man
for the misery of his children.

Confronted with such poverty,
what does the nobility do?

In your eyes alone
did I here descry an expresssion
of human compassion,
so I looked upon you
as upon an angel,
and thought:  there is life's true beauty!
But then, when I heard your words,
my heart reeled from yet another blow.

Young and beautiful as you are,
scorn not the words of a poet!
Mark this:  you know not what love is.
Love is a devine gift - do not despise it.
The moving spirit of the universe is love!
